Leah Stein

LEAH STEIN, Artistic Director of Leah Stein Dance Company, creates site-inspired collaborative performance works. Her dances invoke and illuminate the living histories of built and natural spaces. She has received numerous commissions and initiated major performance projects including GATE at Eastern State Penitentiary National Historic Site, TURBINE at the Fairmount Water Works in collaboration with composer Byron Au Yong and Alan Harler of the Mendelssohn Club Chorus, Battle Hymns at the 23rd Street Armory with composer David Lang and Mendelssohn Club Chorus and Urban Echo: Circle Told with composer Pauline Oliveros and singers in the Mendelssohn Club Chorus. She has collaborated with numerous individual artists. A Lily Lilies, a collaborative book of Josey Foo’s poems and Stein’s notes on dance was published in 2011. In 2014, LSDC engaged in a year-long research project guided by composer Pauline Oliveros; “An inquiry into forging an improvisational, compositional practice for voice and movement.” This ongoing research informs her current choreographic and teaching practices. She is a Deep Listening Certificate Holder and has taught extensively in the Philadelphia region including Swarthmore College, Bryn Mawr College and Drexel University.
