Gayle Young
SCORE: Pauline's Rainbow
GAYLE YOUNG was an early participant in the improv community that formed around the Music Gallery in 1970s Toronto. She studied contemporary music at Toronto’s York University and attended several Deep Listening Retreats with Pauline Oliveros, IONE, and Heloise Gold. In addition to her pieces for orchestral instruments she presents concerts as a composer and performer of microtonal music on acoustic instruments of her own design. Many of her concert pieces and sound installations incorporate pre-recorded soundscapes. Her outdoor installations integrate pre-existing soundscapes with the invitation to the public to activate sound through found materials. Young has written extensively on contemporary music and sound arts. Young is the publisher (and former editor) of Musicworks Magazine.
